Description
The Potting Pantry Perlite helps you create lighter, freer-draining potting mixes for houseplants, cacti, succulents, seedlings and cuttings. Perlite is a lightweight, porous growing medium made from expanded volcanic material. It does not feed the plant. Instead, it improves the structure of the soil. When you mix it into compost or potting soil, it creates small air pockets around the roots. These air pockets help water move through the mix more freely while also supporting better airflow. This makes perlite especially useful for indoor plants that dislike heavy, wet or compacted soil. It works well in houseplant soil, cactus soil, succulent soil, seed starting mixes, cutting mixes, terrariums and DIY potting blends. You can also mix it with compost, coir, bark, sand, grit, vermiculite or biochar to create a blend that suits your plant. How to use: mix around 20–30% perlite into compost for most houseplants. For cacti, succulents and plants that prefer a drier root zone, increase the amount to around 30–40%. Water after potting, then adjust future watering to suit the plant, pot size and growing conditions. FAQ What does perlite do for plants? It improves drainage, airflow and soil structure. Is perlite a fertiliser? No. Perlite improves the growing mix, but it does not feed plants. Can I use it for cactus and succulent soil? Yes. It helps create a lighter, freer-draining mix. Can I use it for seedlings and cuttings? Yes. It helps keep propagation mixes open, airy and easy for young roots to grow through. Is perlite the same as vermiculite? No. Perlite mainly improves drainage and airflow. Vermiculite holds more moisture. Safety: avoid breathing in dust. Use in a well-ventilated area. Keep away from children and pets. Not suitable for consumption.
